Happy Bastille Day

Here are some Night Lights shows from the archives, with jazz interpretations of the many standards that have been written about the City of Light:

  • Paris Noir: African-American Musicians in France features Dexter Gordon, Bud Powell, Lucky Thompson, and some of the other black American jazz artists who lived as expatriates in France in the years after World War II.
  • Jazz in the Postwar French Cinema features the music of Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Martial Sola and other jazz musicians who provided scores for movies such as Elevator to the Gallows and Breathless. Includes an interview with cinema scholar and jazz devotee James Naremore.
