Merrillville Abortion Clinic Can Resume Providing Abortions

Planned Parenthood in Merrillville is able to provide abortions again. The clinic had to suspend operations last month because a doctor had severed ties with the center. That put them in violation of an Indiana law that requires abortion centers to have agreements with doctors who have admitting privileges at local hospitals.

Planned Parenthood was able to find another physician to sign that backup agreement. The Department of Health notified the clinic Monday it could resume its abortion services.

In a statement, Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky President and CEO Christie Gillespie said the organization is committed to providing a wide range of services, including abortion, regardless of regulatory challenges.

The Merrillville clinic is one of six licensed abortion clinics in the state.
