More Hoosiers Enroll In Healthcare Coverage For 2015

The number of Hoosiers who signed up for 2015 healthcare coverage during the open enrollment period is up significantly, compared to 2014.

Last year, 132,423 Indiana residents enrolled, and 218,617 Hoosiers signed up for insurance for 2015 coverage before Sunday's deadline.

According to the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, that's less than half of the uninsured Hoosiers who qualify for coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

But Federal Marketplace CEO Kevin Counihan says Indiana's heading in the right direction.

"No one is saying this was perfect," Counihan says. "No one is saying there aren't ways we can do it better next year, because clearly there are and we're planning on doing that. But, if you look at the growth in Indiana and you look at that 219,000, we're pleased by the results."

The biggest push for coverage came on Sunday, the last day of open enrollment.

Technical glitches prevented some from signing up, so the HHS is working to help them get coverage.
