Anne Akiko Meyers "Smile"

Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers was introduced the American public through two appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and the Emmy Awards at the age of 11. At twelve she had performed with the LA and New York Philharmonics. And by the ripe old age of 16, she had won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. Her latest project is a journey that takes this 39 year-old artist across many borders of musical cultures.

The classical repertoire is here, with Schubert, Piazzolla, Messiaen and Pärt, but also making appearances are selections by Charles Chaplin (yes, THE Charlie Chaplin), a new arrangement of Dorothy Gale's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and two versions of Japanese folk melodies in transcriptions for violin.

Our quick pick this week is a collection of recordings by the late mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. She performs music of Brahms, Schumann, Debussy and Handel with pianist Julius Drake.
