Different Ways to Think About Early Music

The 2023 Bloomington Early Music Festival begins Sunday, May 21. I spoke with Bloomington Early Music vice president, Javier Leon, and board member Tomas Lozano about this year’s theme and activities.

The theme is “Arabia, Iberia, and Latin America,” and Leon says, “I think one of the things that over the last couple of years that Bloomington Early Music has been trying to do is explore different ways of thinking about early music, not as a kind of cultural bubble that is centered in Europe, but Europe as a place that was actually a kind of crossroads of many other kind of connections.”

Full festival details and calendar is at blemf.org

Another special event: Wednesday, May 24, WFIU’s early music program, Harmonia, will host a reception in honor of its 1000 th episode. Join us for refreshments, fun…and swag at 6:30 p.m. at the FAR Center for Contemporary Arts in Bloomington, as you enjoy the concert screening the ensemble The Telling, and before MIRYAM’s 8 p.m. performance.
