WTIU50: WTIU News Through the Years

Each Friday, the  WTIU News team dives head-first into the biggest headlines of the week on Indiana Newsdesk. But current events on WTIU weren’t always so consistent or, well, current.

Since its first news broadcast during the Blizzard of 1978, WTIU has grown in its local news coverage exponentially and through a variety of shows.

The call-in format of the blizzard special prompted Question Air, a civil affairs show in which viewers called in and submitted questions to a panel of local experts. WTIU then moved on to Editors’ Desk, a roundtable discussion that invited a number of local newspaper editors to debate topics of the day.

From there, WTIU transitioned to more traditional news programs with WTIU News Forum, and later WTIU Reports, through the 1990s and 2000s.

That brings us to Indiana Newsdesk, WTIU’s current weekly news show that dives deep into local headlines. The show has even spawned a few spinoff segments, like  Inquire Indiana and the new  City Limits: Bloomington.

Payton Whaley is from a small rural town outside St. Louis. He later moved out east to get a bachelor's degree in journalism from Virginia Tech. He started at WTIU and WFIU in 2018 making web content to put his bad internet habits to good use. He wrote this bio in third person so it didn't sound so narcissistic.
