After four years of dormancy, the concert series Jazz in July is making a return, with a new partnership at the helm.
WFIU and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music’s Department of Jazz Studies are bringing back the series for four shows this month.
“We are excited to restore a great Bloomington summer tradition,” David Brent Johnson, jazz host at WFIU, said in a press release.
The series last wrapped up in 2014 after 20 years of performances at what is now the IU Eskenazi Museum of Art. Johnson and Department of Jazz Studies Chair Tom Walsh, who coordinated the revival, are hoping to bring back the same enthusiasm around the event.
Jazz in July is set to open with the Al Cobine Big Band on Friday at the Conrad Prebys Amphitheater, right behind Bryan House on IU Bloomington’s campus.
The following concerts on July 13 and 27, featuring the Joe Galvin Latin Jazz Octet and the Heartland Trio with Kathryn Sherman, respectively, will also be at the amphitheater.
July 20’s show with the Charlie Ballantine Quartet will take place outside IU’s School of Global and International Studies, near the intersection of Jordan Avenue and 7th Street.
“We have assembled a line-up of wonderful talent in a variety of jazz styles that everyone will enjoy,” Walsh said.
All Jazz in July concerts are free and begin at 7 p.m. In the case of inclement weather, the shows will be moved into room 066 of IU’s Musical Arts Center.
