The Monroe County Recorder’s Office is set to begin mapping locations of properties with racially restrictive covenants as part of its project to collect and identify properties that contain such restrictions.

The Maxwell Manors subdivision is one of many in Bloomington that contains a racially restrictive covenant. “The ownership and occupancy of lots or buildings in this subdivision are forever restricted to members of the pure white race,“ its 1927 deed reads. Such covenants are null and void today.
