  • The Kirkwood Observatory, built in 1901, will have an open house on Wednesday during which visitors can observe Jupiter near its closest point to Earth in 59 years.

    Jupiter will be closer to Earth this evening than at any point in the next 107 years. Additionally, with a new moon, skies will be darker than usual, meaning even clearer views.

    A planet has to have a magnetic field to make aurora lights. The sun is always sending out particles called the solar wind. That wind frequently increases in intensity to become a solar storm when large numbers of particles are released.
