Monroe County says it’s no longer considering land it owns on Bloomington’s southwest side as a future jail site.

Commissioner Penny Githens supported the request but Lee Jones and Julie Thomas both rejected it, saying they agreed with the residents who do not want the area to change.

Commissioners say they're looking at land outside Bloomington since city council members shot down their most recent proposal.

Monroe County Sheriff Brad Swain says the county should consider replacing the 37-year-old jail soon.
