The Bloomington City Council has rejected an ordinance to establish a local historic designation for Lower Cascades Park.

The city's Historic Preservation Commission could proceed with a nomination in November.

The council meeting came four days after a rally organized by residents who oppose Hamilton’s plan.

Old State Road 37, which runs through Lower Cascades, is how many residents say they get to the park and navigate through town during major sporting events.

Mayor John Hamilton wants city council to consider closing a stretch of Old State Road 37 to cars between Clubhouse Drive and North College Avenue, but residents oppose the idea.

Survey results were mixed, but many have said they prefer keeping the road open to vehicle traffic.
