Bloomington To Survey Residents On Housing Needs Through Community Input Sessions

City leaders say the new plan will outline how the city can eliminate barriers to developing more housing.
City leaders say the new plan will outline how the city can eliminate barriers to developing more housing.

The city of Bloomington is asking residents to weigh in on the development of its next long term consolidated housing plan. The 5-year plan will identify affordable housing needs in the city.

Eric Sader is the city’s Assistant Director for Housing and Neighborhood Development. He says by consulting the public, the city can gauge what needs should be filled.

“With those workshops, we’re looking at really not what we as a city government want, but what do those members of that particular neighborhood want,” Sader says.

The stakeholder meetings come as a requirement for the city in order to receive two Housing and Urban Development grants. Topics will range from asset-building in lower income neighborhoods, development challenges, and housing equity and affordability.

“So on housing affordability, we’re really looking at the finances. What can people afford to live in in this community? And that includes both rental and home ownership,” Sader says.

City leaders say the new document will include an action plan on how the city can eliminate barriers to developing more housing.

The current plan expires this year.

Residents can also provide feedback through an online survey through the Housing and Neighborhood Development Department.
