Two Bloomington women are facing child neglect charges following the death of a 3-year-old girl.

In a press release, the sheriff’s office says deputies were called to do a welfare check at the 4000 block of north Thomas Road on August 8. They found the 3-year-old girl unconscious and not breathing.

The child was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, but then flown to Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis.

The child was pronounced dead Wednesday at Riley Hospital — five days after police were called to the home.

On Thursday, deputies arrested 27-year-old Keera L. Braun and 50-year-old Millissa Hicks.

Both women were taken to the Monroe County Jail.

According to the press release, Braun was arrested for one count of Level 1 Neglect of a Dependent and two counts of Level 6 Neglect of a Dependent.

Hicks was arrested for one count of Level 1 Neglect of a Dependent and one count Level 6 Neglect of a Dependent.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

WFIU/WTIU News is an independent newsroom rooted in public service.

“Act Independently” is one of the basic creeds of journalism ethics, and we claim it proudly. The WFIU/WTIU News facilities are located on the campus of Indiana University, which does hold our broadcast license and contribute funding to our organization. However, our journalists and senior news leaders have full authority over journalistic decisions — what we decide to cover and how we tell our stories. We observe a clear boundary: Indiana University and RTVS administrators focus on running a strong and secure organization; WFIU/WTIU journalists focus on bringing you independent news you can trust.
