Southern Indiana Fall Color Expected Mid-October

As fall officially starts later this month, Brown County is preparing for tourists to come from all over to take in the changing seasons.

Brown County State Park is known for its views of vibrant foliage. Interpretive Naturalist Patrick Haulter says people can expect color to begin developing next month.

"It’ll be beautiful all through the month of October as you drive through the park," he says.

Haulter says trees at lower elevations change earlier than those at higher points in the park.

Color change depends a lot on the species of tree. Haulter says you’ll typically start seeing changes in Walnut trees first, with other trees following.

Unexpected weather can sometimes shorten the leaf peeping season.

"What’ll happen sometimes is the leaves will die and start to change color, and then a huge wind storm comes through and blows a lot of them off of the trees, and that will kind of cause our season to be cut short.”

You can keep track of the changing colors using Brown County’s online leaf cam.
