After ten years of work, organizers in Evansville are set to open the city's African-American Museum Tuesday. Museum founder Sondra Matthews says it's not being billed as a grand opening because two of the seven exhibits are not finished.
Matthews says the grand opening should come next year. The museum is housed in a former 1930s public housing development building, which became a hub for the African-American community in Evansville. Visitors can take a virtual tour of the neighborhood in the 1950s and see displays of noteworthy blacks from southwest Indiana, both living and deceased. Matthews says this is the first museum of its kind built in Indiana. She says there are plans for a statewide African-American museum in Indianapolis.
