Bed Bugs Reported on IU Bloomington Campus

A female staff member found one bed bug climbing on the wall in her cubicle. Another one was later found in the same area. Both bugs were on the fifth floor in an area not open to students. IU staff has inspected the area and set up traps.

IU Environmental Health and Safety director Mike Jenson said the university is taking a number of precautions.

"We'll continue to monitor it at least for the rest of the week. We've also educated the staff there so that they understand what bedbugs look like and they're gonna be our best monitors out there. I think they know to call us and I'm sure they will if they see one immediately."

Jenson said he doesn't think there's an extensive bedbug infestation. Meanwhile, students like sophomore Katie Banks say the situation makes her uneasy but she's not going to change her habits by for example, avoiding the library.

"Two is bad. Obviously you want zero, but it's not like it's an infestation of them," said Banks.

University officials say they believe they've caught the problem early since they've only found two bugs and in the past 24 hours they have not found any.

According to the Terminix pest control company, Indianapolis ranks 12 th as the most bedbug infested city based on call volume and confirmed reports.
