Lee Hamilton is being honored for his 34 years of service in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The former Democratic Congressman received this year's Distinguished Service Award from the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress Wednesday.
Before his election to Congress, Hamilton graduated from the IU law school. During his time in Congress he was a leader on foreign policy and after he retired, he founded the Center on Congress at Indiana University.
This is the 44 th year the association has given out the award. Other recent recipients include former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and Rep. Ray Lahood.
