No Harmful Levels Of Blue-Green Algae Found In Lake Monroe

Recent tests conducted at Lake Monroe revealed there are no harmful levels of blue-green algae present in the water.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says the species can be linked to some negative health effects.

IDEM has been taking samples from lakes throughout the state to check blue-green algae levels.

Lake Monroe Assistant Property Manager Corey Reiman says if tests indicate large amount of blue-green algae is present, toxins can end up in the water.

"It's recently been linked to some skin irritations," Reiman says. "There's even been reports of pets, family pets dying after drinking it. It's not been a great issue to humans that we're aware of."

Tests at Lake Monroe showed blue-green algae was below all warning levels and no toxins were detected.
