Bedford Sign Ordinance Lawsuit Heads to Court

A lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana challenging the City of Bedford's sign ordinance is heading to court after the parties failed to reach a resolution during mediation.

The ACLU filed the lawsuit last year on behalf of Bedford resident Sam Shaw, who placed large signs on his property expressing his opinions.

As part of a new ordinance, the city asked Shaw to take his signs down last September or face hundreds of dollars in fines. Shaw says he feels the city is infringing on his rights as a private citizen.

"It's not what they will do, it's what they can do," Shaw says. "They might not do it ... but the point is, they can."

The city of Bedford changed its sign ordinance in December in response to the ACLU's lawsuit, but the case is moving forward.

Sides will present oral arguments and evidence in an Indianapolis district court Wednesday morning.
