Bloomington Winter Shelter Establishes Permanent Location

The Bloomington Interfaith Emergency Winter Shelter will open November 1 in just one location.

The cold-weather shelter for people experiencing homelessness has previously rotated between six separate locations, including Wheeler Mission Ministries, which will now be the shelter's only location.

Volunteer coordinator and former board president Daniel Watts says consolidating services in one place will save money and help staff better connect the homeless to resources.

"Since we partner with other agencies and programs in Bloomington, having one location will help us in making those kind of links," Watts says. "So we think everyone will benefit."

The Bloomington Board of Zoning Adjustment approved an application Thursday to expand the number of visitors allowed at Wheeler Mission per night.

Watts says last season, the shelter had 50 visitors each each night, but he's noticed numbers decreasing over the years due to increasing housing options in Bloomington.

The shelter will be open through March 31.
