Bloomington Interfaith Shelter In Need Of Volunteers To Operate

Bloomington's Interfaith Shelter needs volunteers. The shelter provides the homeless with shelter, food and health provisions.

The shelter has 123 trained volunteers – that's about a quarter of what it had last spring.

Daniel Watts is the volunteer coordinator. He says the shelter needs at least 23 volunteers each night to operate.

In previous years, the shelter rotated between different churches. Moving forward, it will only be stationed at Wheeler Mission Ministries.

"I think many people who have been volunteers in the past were waiting to hear exactly what was happening before they made the move to get signed up to volunteer again this season," Watts says.

He says volunteers are vital to the success of the shelter and without them the shelter won't be able to operate.

"If we're going to continue to have a space for people who have no other place to sleep when it's cold we're going to have to increase the number of people who are willing to help out," Watts says.

The shelter opens November 1 and continues through the spring.
