The Indiana Department of Health wants to make it easier for parents to find out what vaccinations their children have had and which ones they still need.
MyVaxIndiana.in.gov allows Hoosiers to to view their children's or their own immunization records. All they need is a pin number, which they can get from their healthcare provider or local health department.
Department of Health Commissioner Gregory Larkin says immunizations are one of the most crucial elements of public health. And he says the website doesn't just contain a record of past vaccinations.
"Equally important, they can see, based on their own immunization records, which immunizations are missing or which immunizations should be planned for," he says.
The online tool was developed using a federal grant.
Judy Murphy is a deputy coordinator at the Office of the National Coordinator, which helped Indiana create the new system. He says MyVaxIndiana is about empowering patients.
"Too much of what goes on in our healthcare organization is where we're dependent on others as patients," she says. "And this is about creating independence."
Larkin says he expects the website to help remove many of the stumbling blocks that were keeping parents from having their children correctly immunized for school.
