The City of Bloomington honored one of its own over the weekend — if a bit prematurely.
USS Voyager Captain Kathryn Janeway will be born in Bloomington, Earth in 2336. But Star Trek fans couldn’t wait that long to mark her future birthplace.
A group of dedicated fans unveiled a statue of Janeway on Saturday along the B-Line trail.
Actress Kate Mulgrew played the iconic female lead of the popular Star Trek: Voyager series, which started in 1995 and ran for seven seasons.
She joined fans virtually and promised to make the trip to see the statue in person once the pandemic ended.

“We took the journey. Today we are at the journey’s end. Today Captain Janeway returns home to the place of her birth,” organizer Peter Kaczmarczyk said at the unveiling.
There is already a statue honoring the original series’ Captain James Kirk in Riverside, Iowa, where Kirk will be born on March 22, 2233.
Fans of Janeway thought her birthplace should receive similar recognition.
But they had to convince the City of Bloomington and CBS to let them build.
The Trekkies intended to unveil the statue on Janeway’s future birthday — May 20th — but postponed the event due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Star Trek writer Jeri Taylor is a Bloomington native and graduated from Indiana University.
