Volunteers can help IU Health and the Monroe County Health Department with the COVID-19 vaccination process.
IU Health South Central Region President Brian Shockney said a wide range of volunteer opportunities exist, from making and answering calls, to checking people in to get the shot, to otherwise supporting front-line health care providers.
He said those with a background in nursing are especially helpful. He said his wife, a former nurse, just started volunteering. But he added IU Health has plenty of people to give shots.
Shockney said those who receive the shot should plan to wait 15 to 30 minutes before they can leave. Patients move from one room to another where they will wait on spread-out chairs while a clock on a big screen marks the time. Each will have a card marking the time they can leave if they have no adverse reaction to the vaccine. Monitors in the room, also volunteers, will clear people to go.
Shockney said emergency responders are standing by.
“We have people faint getting blood draws every day,” he said. “Needles can sometimes do that.”
