IU Health administered its 10,000 th COVID-19 vaccine in Bloomington Monday. As of Tuesday, the health care system has given first vaccine shots to 12,253 patients in its south-central region.
IU Health South Central Region Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dan Handel said hospital staff are administering the vaccines as quickly as they get them. The only limit, he said, is the supply of shots that are available.
“As many vaccines as the state or otherwise will give us we want to get to people,” he said. “All of us are ready and we’ll continue to flex up as the supplies become more available.”

Handel said the rollout should continue to improve because there are numerous partners administering the vaccine now, such as county health departments, and he expects the state will open more sites soon.
He said people should receive their second dose at the same location they received the first one to make sure they receive the same brand and appropriate records are readily available.
Handel acknowledged some people may have heard they can go to vaccination sites when they are about to close and get their shot without an appointment. But he said that is not true.
“Especially now that we’re vaccinating people 70 and up, there aren’t extra doses sitting around,” he said. “Every dose is going into someone’s arm.”
