Indiana Records Fewer Than 800 New COVID-19 Cases

COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to increase with 1,138 Hoosiers hospitalized due to the virus.
COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to increase with 1,138 Hoosiers hospitalized due to the virus.

The Indiana Department of Health reported Thursday 786 new COVID-19 cases, the lowest number reported since Sept. 28.

Winter storms closed many testing and  vaccination centers across Indiana, which may have affected the number of tests administered and cases reported. Indiana documented 25,760 new tests, nearly half the number of tests reported last Thursday. The 786 new cases and 29 new deaths increased Indiana’s totals to 652,210 cases and 11,854.

Hospitalizations increased slightly from 955 to 966 Hoosiers, but fewer patients with the virus occupy ICU beds. Only 8.2% of Indiana ICU beds are in use by COVID-19 patients, while 38% remain available. These patients are using fewer than 4% of the state’s ventilators.

Indiana has administered more than 7.65 million tests on more than 3 million Hoosiers with a seven-day positivity rate of 4.5%.

More than 851,000 Indiana residents have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and 377,331 Hoosiers have been fully vaccinated.

In Monroe County, the IDOH reported seven new cases of COVID-19, increasing the county totals to 10,147 cases. The county death toll remained at 156.

Forty-four residents in the area are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, and patients with the virus occupy 5.8% of ICU beds. More than 57% of ICU beds in the area remain available.

Monroe County has administered 313,035 tests on 79,906 county residents, with a 0.9% seven-day positivity rate. This is the county’s lowest positivity rate since Aug. 20.

IDOH data shows 16,355 county residents have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 8,691 — about 5.85% of the county’s population — have received both doses.
