An autopsy found that while Michael had sustained burns from the fire, her preliminary cause of death was by strangulation. Monroe County Coroner Joani Shields preliminarily ruled Michael's death a homicide.

About a week after Michael’s death, investigators named 30-year-old Eric Quentin Johnson as a suspect.

BPD worked with the Columbia, South Carolina Police Department to locate and arrest Johnson.

Johnson was extradited to Bloomington Wednesday. He’s being held at the Monroe County Jail on charges of vehicle theft and murder.
