In-Street Dining On Kirkwood Will Resume Next Week

On-the-street dining will return to portions of Kirkwood Avenue next week.

The city announced Wednesday it was closing three blocks of Kirkwood to vehicle traffic starting next Thursday and running through June 30.

The closures will create pedestrian spaces and allow for outdoor dining and ways to social distance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s the same three blocks the city closed to traffic last summer and fall – Indiana Avenue to Dunn Street; Dunn Street to Grant, and Washington Street to Walnut Street. North-south traffic through the intersections will be affected.

“These temporary street closures allow us to protect the health of diners and restaurant workers while still supporting our vibrant downtown restaurant district,” Mayor John Hamilton said in a press release. “We appreciate the efforts of everyone who has collaborated on this plan, making it possible for us to enjoy the upcoming warm weather and great meals in a safe, socially distanced atmosphere.”

The city said the decision to again close the streets “was made based on collaboration with Downtown Bloomington, Inc., and the Kirkwood Community Association, and with input from affected downtown businesses.”

The city said it could modify the dates of closure should the need arise.
