Brown County Schools Will Focus On Fall Tutoring, 2022 Summer School

School administrators are looking at different ways to address learning loss that occurred during the pandemic.

Dr. Laura Hammack is the Brown County School district’s superintendent. She said while many districts plan to use intensive summer school programs to catch students up from lost classroom time, that won’t be Brown County’s approach.

“While there might be value there, we have just embraced the notion that this summer for Brown County Schools is not going to be that summer for us.”

Hammack says there will be a summer school option available this year. But CARES dollars her district receives will be focused on an extensive tutoring program in the fall and summer school for 2022.

She said this year has been very hard on teachers, and they need a chance to recover from high levels of stress.

She added filling gaps in learning and inequality that has been exacerbated will require a holistic approach, and can’t only focus on academic components.
