Indiana University Bloomington Executive Vice President and Provost Lauren Robel will step down from her leadership positions at the end of June, according to a Wednesday announcement from the university.

Robel served as an associate dean and later dean of IU's Maurer School of Law from 1991 until 2011. She was named Executive VP and Provost of IU Bloomington in 2012.

In a statement emailed to students, faculty and staff, Robel wrote that she will be returning to "the academic work that is the greatest joy at the center of [IU's] mission" in her position as the Val Nolan Professor of Law at Maurer.

Robel gained national attention for her response to Kelley School of Business Professor Eric Rasmusen's 2019 tweets about women in academia.

A Wednesday afternoon statement from IU President Michael McRobbie said McRobbie will appoint an interim provost to serve from July 1 until IU's next president appoints a new provost.

Robel's position change will coincide with McRobbie's retirement, also effective June 30. McRobbie announced his plans to retire after 14 years as president in August 2020.
