Yes, the “Jared Subway” has closed.
The storefront at 401 S. Woodlawn Ave. in Bloomington is now barren, but will soon be home to a new Inkwell Bakery & Cafe location.
Tracy Gates, who owns The Inkwell downtown, says the 1,400-square-foot location at the corner of Woodlawn and Atwater will provide most everything that is offered at its store downtown.
“We’ll do sandwiches, we’ll do salads,” Gates said. “We’re gonna do a pared down menu because we lack storage there, but yeah, we'll be doing a lot of ‘breakfast-to-gos.’”
If all goes according to plan, the new location will be open by the end of August.
A Subway sandwich shop had been at the location since the 1990s. It became famous locally after former IU student Jared Fogle lost 245 pounds by sticking to a self-designed “Subway diet.”
Fogle became a Subway spokesperson and was the public face of the company for more than 15 years. In 2015, Fogle was charged with several child pornography charges and sex crimes. He is serving a 15 year prison sentence.
Subway did not respond to request for comment on the store closure.
