Bloomington residents will pay more for wastewater and stormwater starting in January.
Wastewater fees will increase in two waves - the first will be a 12 percent hike in January 2023 and a six percent hike in January 2025. Flat-rate stormwater fees will increase from $5.95 to $7.50 for all utility users.
City of Bloomington Utilities director Vic Kelson said the additional revenue will help with inflation and infrastructure upgrades.
“Sewers do back up sometimes, and sewers do overflow sometimes,” Kelson said. “We need to do infrastructure work to prevent that from happening in the future.”
Kelson says the average resident will see a $3-$4 increase in wastewater, plus the additional $1.55 cent increase in stormwater. In total, the average customer will see their monthly bill go up about $5.50.
For residents concerned about the rate increase, CBU offers support through the South-Central Community Action Program for those struggling to pay water bills.
“It’s important to contact us before you get disconnected, because after you’re disconnected our options are a lot less flexible,” Kelson said.
