The Sullivan County Long-Term Tornado Recovery Coalition it intends to complete its work and sunset the group at the end of August.
Formed after a tornado hit Sullivan County in March of 2023, the coalition sought to distribute funds and assistance to those affected by the storm with unmet needs.
About $1.3 million in donations was received by the Wabash Valley Community Foundation, the fiscal sponsor of the coalition. Those fiscal donations were spent on the purchase of two homes, 23 home repairs, 15 home rebuilds, 11 furniture packages, 12 appliance packages, and 60 mattresses.
The Community Foundation estimates that $300,000 will remain after the coalition shutters.
On how the remainder will be spent, the coalition said in a statement released Monday, “The Community Foundation is working with local officials to identify community needs for improvements in the areas where the 2023 tornado hit.”
More than 180 claims were filed with the coalition, with some closed without receiving aid due to claimants not providing enough information, seeking reimbursement for house upgrades rather than replacements, and having sufficient property insurance.
