West Nile Virus found in Monroe County

West Nile Virus is the most common mosquito-borne disease in North America.
West Nile Virus is the most common mosquito-borne disease in North America.

West Nile Virus has been found in mosquitoes in Monroe County, the health department announced Monday.

"Most people who become infected with West Nile Virus will have either no symptoms or mild symptoms, including fever, headache, body aches, or rash," the Monroe County Health Department said in a news release.

One in 150 people who are infected have a more severe form of the disease. People over 50 are at higher risk. The disease is fatal in one of 10 people who develop the more severe form of the disease. No vaccine is available for humans.

Someone bitten by an infected mosquito may show symptoms three to 15 days after a bite.

The symptoms include high fever, severe headache, nausea, sore joints and confusion.

“Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk," Environmental Health Director Michael Kuzemka said. "Any-size container holding water, even the size of a bottle cap, could be a breeding area for mosquitoes on your property. Keeping yards mowed will help reduce the mosquito population.”
