More than 40 people are being relocated after a Wednesday morning fire.

A city news release said the Bloomington fire department responded to 911 calls of a four-story apartment building fire at 519 North Lincoln Street. Two Monroe Fire Protection District crews responded to the scene as well.

Firefighters saw smoke when they arrived on the scene. Many residents had already evacuated due to the fire alarm.

Officials said the fire spread quickly due to hidden void spaces in the building. Eighteen apartments sustained significant fire, smoke, and water damage.

No injuries were reported. Two firefighters were taken to the IU Health emergency room for evaluation and later released. The release said many of the building residents are Indiana University students.

Bloomington Animal Care and Control also responded to help recover pets. Pet owners may contact the Bloomington Animal Shelter for missing pets.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
