Former Bloomington City Council member Steve Volan is running for the District 3 seat on the board of county commissioners this year.

The seat is currently held by Penny Githens, who told WFIU/WTIU News she has not yet decided whether she’ll seek reelection. Githens has served on the board since 2019.

Volan and Githens are both Democrats.

Volan represented Bloomington’s sixth district on the city council from 2004 to 2023. The district is made up heavily of Indiana University students and is currently represented by Sydney Zulich.

Redistricting in 2022 placed Volan into District 4, along with his former city council colleague and the district’s current representative Dave Rollo. Volan unsuccessfully ran for an at-large city council seat last year.

Volan held several titles during his time on the city council including president, vice president and parliamentarian.

He also served on the city’s parking commission and the board of directors for the Waste Reduction District of Monroe County.

Volan could not immediately be reached for comment by WFIU/WTIU News.
