White wins Republican primary for commissioner’s seat

Paul White has won the Republican nomination for the District 3 seat on the Monroe County Board of Commissioners.

On Tuesday, Van Deventer beat challenger Joe Van Deventer, the only other Republican running for one of the commissioner seats up for election this year.

White is a bus driver for Rural Transit, a service of Area 10 Agency on Aging, and has held several other jobs.

White has said county taxation is the issue most important to him. He criticized elected officials for raising property tax rates and for not making more progress on the Monroe Convention Center expansion project, which has been collecting on the food and beverage tax.

Commissioner District 3 covers the eastern portion of the county, which includes Benton, Clear Creek, Salt Creek, Washington and parts of Perry and Polk townships. Candidates must live in the district, but all voters in the county can vote for them.
