In the Habit

Although the majority of this composer's cantatas were for religious services, this isn't true across the board. The inspiration for this work was a trendy new beverage that was making its way across Europe in the early eighteenth century. The plot of the cantata concerns a young lady, hopelessly addicted to the jive of the java, and her father, who tries to "cure" her by interfering in her love-life! Despite the satirical tone, the composer actually owes a lot to this caffeinated fad, as it led to the opening of an establishment in which he frequently led performances…
