As the growing season winds down, there are some plants, known in the trade as season extenders, that bridge the gap between fall and winter in gardens.
Our oakleaf hydrangeas and some perennial geraniums have warm leaf color. The itea shrubs flaunt their mahogany red foliage, and the amsonia, also known as willow-leaf blue star, has bright gold leaves.
Sedums such as ‘Angelina’ and ‘Pure Joy’ also have great foliage impact.
In shade, the American heuchera and Hudson Bay hosta also show bright fall color. I also love the ‘Little Lime’ panicle hydrangeas and ‘Bixby’ rhododendron and the ‘Blue Shadow’ fothergilla.
There are flashes of purple and red in the leaves of Japanese forest grass also.
As it gets colder in the fall, Heuchera Americana, in both full and partial sun, shows wonderfully colored veining so that the leaves are a mosaic of silver, red, and green.
In full sun, Echinacea ‘Pow Wow Wild Berry’ produces wonderful seed heads. And check out your vegetable garden if you grow asparagus and use some of that feathery foliage when it is yellow and gold. It contrasts wonderfully with colorful tree foliage in fall arrangements.
