Made In Detroit: Jazz From The Motor City, Part 2

Pianist Geri Allen was one of several notable musicians to emerge from the late-20th century Detroit jazz scene.
Pianist Geri Allen was one of several notable musicians to emerge from the late-20th century Detroit jazz scene.

In part 2 of "Made In Detroit: Jazz From The Motor City," Detroit jazz chronicler Mark Stryker talks about the common denominators we can hear among players of the mid-20th century "golden age" and the musicians who followed in their wake. We also discuss Motown's relationship to the Detroit jazz community, the way that community responded to the issues of urban decline that afflicted the city in the 1960s and 70s, and the continuing importance of mentors and schools in the late 20th and early 21st century Detroit jazz scene.

Artists heard on the program include Yusef Lateef, Kenny Burrell, Louis Hayes, Tribe, Geri Allen, Kenny Garrett, and the Contemporary Jazz Quintet.
