Humberto “Bert” Sanchez was one of 13 U.S. service members killed during a bombing attack in Afghanistan in August while helping with evacuation efforts at the Kabul airport.

Sanchez’s body arrived Sunday morning at Grissom Air Reserve Base near Peru, about 80 miles north of Indianapolis. The procession then headed about 20 miles to Logansport.

U.S. Marine Cpl. Humberto Sanchez was one of 13 military service members killed inside the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, by a suicide bomber on Aug. 26.

Gundrum Funeral Home & Crematory in Logansport said Sanchez’s body will be transported home on Sept. 12. Details on funeral services were still being finalized.

The mother of Marine Corporal Humberto Sanchez says her son was a trouble-maker growing up - even earning the nickname Piranha. But she says he was a happy kid who loved making people laugh.

The Logansport Community School Corp. announced on social media that Sanchez was a graduate of Logansport High School in the 18,000-person city about 70 miles north of Indianapolis.

Cpl. Humberto Sanchez, from Logansport, died along with a dozen other American service members and many more Afghan civilians in the bombing attack.
