Eastern Greene Schools Superintendent Ted Baechtold is retiring after serving five years in the position and spending nearly 20 in the district.

Baechtold says the decision is largely unrelated to recent controversy surrounding the district’s school board decision to not renew contracts for high school’s football coach and athletic director.

Rather, he says he needs to take care of himself and dedicate time to his family. He says he’ll stay in Greene County.

"Eastern Greene became like a hometown for me," he says. "I never had one growing up, we moved so much.  I lived all over the world at various times, so this is the longest I’ve ever been any place in my entire life."

Baechtold will retire at the end of the school year. The school board will choose his replacement.
