DePauw President To Resign At End Of Year

DePauw President Mark McCoy is stepping down at the end of the 2019-2020 academic school year, according to a release from the university.

McCoy served as the dean of DePauw's school of music when he was tapped to lead the university in 2016.

"I have loved my time at DePauw as dean and president,” said McCoy in a statement. “I remain in awe of our faculty, staff, students and alumni and will treasure the relationships developed here for a lifetime. I am also proud of the administrative team and our focus on building a strong foundation for the continued investment in our student experience, people and campus."

McCoy's tenure at DePauw was not without controversy.  In 2018, DePauw faculty held a  vote of no confidence on McCoy.

At the time many of the faculty said they were concerned with the private university's financial status, and cutbacks to their health insurance plan. The school in February announced job cuts as part of a restructuring.

McCoy was also criticized for the way he handled an incident in April 2018, when  racial slurs were written on a bathroom wall at the school.

McCoy told WTIU Monday that some his restructuring decisions at DePauw haven't been popular, "but they have been in the best decisions for the long term interests of DePauw."

McCoy says he believes "new leadership can build on this stronger foundation." The school will search for his replacement and McCoy will help in making a smooth transition.
