Bloomingfoods General Manager Resigning In January

The general manager of Bloomington-based co-op Bloomingfoods will resign in January.

Tony Alongi started the job in March of last year. Shortly after he became the general manager, Bloomingfoods decided to close its Elm Heights location as part of a larger consolidation plan.

Bloomingfoods sent an e-mail to the co-op's member-owners announcing the change on Monday. The e-mail says Alongi will resign in mid-January. The board will select an interim general manager to run the co-op while it looks for a permanent replacement.

"It has been an enormous privilege to lead Bloomingfoods during an important period of transformation and I want to thank our staff and members for both their continued support and their patience during what has been a time of endless change for the Co-op," Alongi says in the email.

George Huntington served as GM for 20 years before Alongi took the position. Over the past few years, the co-op's suffered declines in business and had to lay off about a dozen managerial staff members.
