Kokomo officials cut the ribbon on the city's newest downtown affordable housing complex Tuesday. Apperson Way Apartments include a playground, gardens, game rooms, computer lab and a school textbook scholarship program.
Mayor Greg Goodnight says the area was rundown and contaminated at one point.
"Now we have a $9.5 million dollar 69 unit apartment complex for families, so we feel like it's really been flipped and was somewhat of a liability and now an asset to our community," Goodnight says.
He says the complex is already more than 25 percent leased.
Apperson Way Apartments is the result of a partnership with Indianapolis-based Partners In Housing, an organization that rescues and rehabilitates properties for affordable housing.
