The Bloomington City Council voted Wednesday to support a tax that would help fund an expansion of the Monroe County Convention Center.
The implementation of the tax still has to be approved by the Monroe County Council.
As City Council member Susan Sandberg explains, the vote is the city's way of showing the county it supports the tax.
"This is not us initiating this, this was some of us suspected was as a result of the county wanting to make sure that if they did proceed with the funding mechanism and did approve this the city would indeed be lending its support."
The 1 percent food and beverage tax would be added to prepared food. That tax will fund an additional 70,000 square feet of convention space at a projected cost of $35 million.
No word yet on when the county council will take up the issue.
