County officials are still waiting on a request for certification from a company hoping to open a waste transfer facility on the west side of Bloomington.
Tom McGlasson is the Executive Director of the Monroe County Solid Waste Management District. He says the last time he spoke with a representative from the company, Indiana Green Transfer and Recycling, was almost a month ago. Indiana Green needs county certification before it can receive state approval for the facility.
A group of community members opposing the facility attended several county meetings this week. About ten people attended Thursday's Board of Director's meeting for the County Solid Waste Management District to speak against the facility.
Mark Napier lives near the proposed site. He says the lack of information from the company led to concern from both community members and county officials.
"I think we're all feeling like we're in limbo, and it's stressful. It's stressful for us, and from talking to some of the folks on this board [it's stressful for them]," he says.
McGlasson says he understands people's worries, and that part of his job, once he receives Indiana Green's request, will be to determine if there's a need for the facility in the proposed location. The proposed site of the transfer station would be located on Angelina Lane on the West Side of Bloomington across from the Printpack facility.
"Whether it's this one or any other one in any other location, unfortunately, it's a needed industry," he says.
Another opponent of Indiana Green, Robert Shaw, has hired an attorney to appeal the zoning of the property. That appeal is scheduled for February.
