Walorski Proposes Bill To Extend Medical Device Tax Suspension

U.S. Rep. Indiana Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.) introduced a bill this week that would suspend the medical device tax for another five years.

The 2.3 percent levy on the revenue of medical device manufacturers went into effect with the Affordable Care Act. The Congressional Research Service says companies paid about $2.4 billion in 2014.

Indiana's large life sciences industry got some relief when Congress passed a two-year suspension of the tax in 2015. But it's set to expire at the end of the year.

Walorski's bill would extend the suspension through 2022.

"The job-killing medical device tax would have a devastating impact on Hoosier workers and patients across the country who depend on life-saving medical innovation," Walorski says in a statement. "I am committed to permanently ending this burdensome tax."

Several Indiana companies have called on Congress to pass a permanent repeal of the tax, but efforts to do so have failed.
