Indiana Department of Natural Resources investigators say a bald eagle was shot in Lawrence County Friday, and later died.

According to a DNR Facebook post, a conservation officer discovered the eagle alive near Dixie Highway, south of the White River, but the bird later died.

The bald eagle is a protected species under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act of 1940. Under the statute, anyone found guilty of possessing, selling or hunting bald eagles is subject to up to a $100,000 fine and a year in prison, with increased penalties for repeat offenders.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Indiana Conservation Officers Central Dispatch at 812-837-9536.

A reward is available for information leading to arrests.
