Congressman Trey Hollingsworth (R-09) told an Indianapolis radio host getting people back to work is the lesser of “two evils” compared with having people continue to socially distance during the pandemic.
Hollingsworth’s district spans from Greenwood south to the Indiana-Kentucky state line near Louisville.
“I don’t think any amount of legislation from D.C. is going to get Americans back up and running, the decision that needs to be made is to get Americans back to work, back to their businesses,” Hollingsworth said on WIBC’s Tony Katz Show on Tuesday.
Echoing President Trump’s call to get the economy open as soon as possible, Hollingsworth told Katz heading off an economic disaster should take priority over public health.
“It is policymakers' decision to put on our big boy and big girl pants, and say this is the lesser of these two evils, and it is not zero evil, but it is the lesser of these evils, and we intend to move forward in that direction,” Hollingsworth said.
Katz said he’s been compared by some on social media to the Nazis for agreeing with Hollingsworth's comments.
Hollingsworth did not respond to a request for comment at the time this story was published.
However, Hollingsworth’s office told USA Today that he believes the U.S. should make as much of the economy work as possible while simultaneously working to reduce disease transmission.
